Nationhood at Work: An Ethnography of Workplaces in Montreal and Brussels

(Supervisors: Martin Endreß, Trier / Barbara Thériault, Montréal)

For now more than two decades, scholars have produced admirable knowledge on everyday nationhood––the nation from below. Few nevertheless based their investigations on ethnographic fieldwork; an avenue I propose to explore. My thesis investigates the experienced meanings of nationhood in the working environments of the bi-ethnic context milieus of Montreal and Brussels. By focusing on people living in areas targeted by nationalist projects, my research aims to understand the enactment of nationhood in individuals’ everyday practices and expressions. This I argue, will allow me to shed light on how nationhood is (re)produced on a daily basis and identify what is (re)produced. In doing so, I wish to deepen our understanding on the contemporary lived salience of the nation in two distinctive sociopolitical contexts.
