Jane Jenson's research and publications span a broad range of topics related to policy analysis, including social movements, relations between Quebec and the rest of Canada, citizenship, diversity, feminist studies, family policy, childcare and care for the elderly. Her interests always focus on questions of social solidarity and social justice: what people owe each other and what people believe they owe each other and to what forms of sharing they are committed.

In March 2001, she was awarded the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Citizenship and Governance. The Chair aims to increase understanding of social policy, citizenship practices and social cohesion in Canada and Europe. In particular, it analyzes new political institutions, especially supra-national ones that are shaping the future, and their impact on citizenship practices. The first area of research development involves theorizing and analyzing the connections between new forms of social and political rights and emerging practices of governance. The second research area seeks to analyze the consequences of shared sovereignty, as is underway in the European Union and North America, for citizenship and governance.

Jane Jenson contributes an important comparative perspective on Canada and the European Union with regard to their multi-level governance institutions, their concepts of the welfare state as well as their policies vis-a-vis diverse and pluralist societies. Her expertise helps the IRTG’s doctoral researchers to understand the restructuring of the citizenship regimes and modes of fostering social cohesion in Canada and the European Union. Her research contributions are especially important for Research Area 1 and 2.
